Lord Subrahmanyeswar Swamy popularly known as Murugan, Kartikeya, Murugan, Skanda and Subrahmanyam Swamy is a Hindu war God.

He is the son of Lord Shiva and mother Goddess Parvathi and is Commander-in-Chief of Devas.

According to the Sthala Purana, Lord Subrahmanyeswara Swamy is in Swayambhu (self-manifested) Linga form at Mopidevi temple.

According to some local legends, Veeravarapu Parvathalu is a great devotee of Lord Karthikeya Swamy and is a pot maker by profession.

Lord Subrahmanyeswara Swamy was once pleased with his ardent devotion appeared in his dream and guided him to dig at the nearby anthill to uncover the Lingam.

Immediately, Pavathalu informed about his dream and took the help of villages to go to the place indicated by Lord Subrahmanyeswara Swamy in the dream.

They started to dig up the anthill and to their surprise, found the Swayambhu Lingam in the anthill. Later, Parvathalu added some more baked clay idols of great Rishis, Nandi, Garuda Horse, Cock and began to worship Swayambhu Lord Subrahmanyeswara Swamy.

Lord Subramanyeswara is the principle deity of the royal family Challapalli and are currently taking care of the temple.

Swayambhu Sri Sakaleswara Swamy Temple (Lord Shiva) is located just beside this temple. King Sagara who is the Grandfather of Lord Rama, worshiped this Lingam.

The Lingam was discovered in the year 1783, when floods washed Mopidevi village. A temple was constructed for the Lingam by the local landlord Adusumilli Gangubhotlu.

Another interesting fact about this temple is that the depth of Lingam is still unknown.
