Alopi Devi Mandir, present at Alopi Bagh in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh is considered one of the Ashta Dasa Shakti Peethas in India.
Many visitors prefer to visit Prayag (Allahabad) and Gaya temples in their Kashi Yatra trip.
Goddess Alopi Mata / Madhaveswari (Lalitha) is the primary deity of this temple.
The peculiarity of Alopi Devi Mandir is that no statue or murti of the goddess Shakti is worshiped in this temple, but rather that there is an empty wooden carriage or 'Doli' worshiped by the devotees.
Goddess Alopi or Madhaveswari is worshiped here in this temple in the invisible form.
Shree Ashtha Dasa Madheshwari (Madhaveswari) Shakti Peeth is present very close to Triveni Sangam (confluence of three rivers), where the holy Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati rivers meet.
Kumbh Mela is near this temple. Millions of pilgrims visit this ancient Alopi bagh temple during the Navratri period as it's very nearest place to Sangam.
Devotees prefer a holy dip in Triveni Sangamam before visiting this temple.
On the other side of this Alopi Mandir there is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva who is worshiped here as Laliteshwar.
The main Goddess Alopi Devi has no deity or idol in this temple but is simply worshiped on a wooden Doli or Jhula placed over a marble stone.
Kumbh Mela is held very close to this temple in Prayagraj every 12 years.
It is believed by the devotees that two fingers of Goddess Sathi’s hands fell and immediately disappeared at this place and hence the place got its name as Alopi (disappearance).
This temple is also considered as one of the Ashta Dasa Shakti Peethas in India by the devotees.
According to an old legend, Lord Shiva, who is in great distress, after the death of his wife Sati or Dakshayani at Daksha-Yaga event, travelled with her dead body through the Universe.
Seeing his agony, Lord Vishnu tried to relieve Shiva of this pain by throwing his Sudarshana Chakra at the Sati's body.
It resulted in the cutting of her body into 51 parts that fell to the earth and became the Shakti Peeths, the temples of the Hindu Divine Mother. (Sati was later reborn as Parvati and married Lord Shiva).
