On April 4, 2022, the formation of the district took place, including some territories that were formerly part of the Anantapur district.

The district is named after Sathya Sai Baba (1926-2011), a famous spiritual leader who was born in Puttaparthi.

This famous Hanuma Temple is present at the northern end of the Gopuram road.

By Train: πŸš‚

Puttaparthi has a nearby railway station by the name Sri Sathya Sai railway station (Station Code: SSPN). Numerous trains from various locations arrive directly at Prasanthi Nilayam.

Dharmavaram Junction (Station Code: DMM), which is about 60 kilometers from Puttaparthi, is an alternative train terminal. From there, you can proceed to the Dharmavaram bus stand and reach Puttaparthi via bus, private vehicle, or by local vans.

By Bus: 🚌

Puttaparthi lies on NH 7, which links Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

From Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and other well-known towns in India, one can take a bus to the Puttaparthi bus stand, which located just opposite to ashram.

By Air: ✈️

The nearest airport to Puttaparthi Prasanthi Nilayam is present at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (Code: BLR). One can then board a taxi or bus to Puttaparthi from there.

Penukonda Fort:


The Penukonda Fort is an important historical site and a popular tourist attraction in Anantapur. This fort is located at a distance of around 65 kilometers from Anantapur city.

Penukonda became the new capital of the Vijayangara Empire for a short time after the battle of Talikota in 1565, which resulted in the fall of the Vijayangara rulers.

The Penner River and the Chitravati River both encircle the fort on its western and eastern sides, respectively. The fort has temples, tanks, wells, and a summer palace. Lepakshi is 30 kilometers south of Penukonda.

Timmarusu, Krishnadevaraya's prime minister, was blinded and imprisoned in a cell at Penukonda fort, which is close to the 1585-built Gagan Mahal summer palace.

There are two ways to get to the Penukonda fort on the hill: on foot and via road.  If you wish to hike up to the fort, the path starts up near Gagan Mahal.
